Winfrey Sick Update Monday  September 19, 2005

Hi Everyone,

GOOD NEWS! I talked to the specialist today. She said that Winfrey's feeding tube stopped working. Why is that good news?

Because that means Winfrey is EATING and does not need the feeding tube.

I am going to pick my little buddy up this afternoon.

YEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Pheww! Thank God! Last week was.....

After a phone call to a friend, Winfrey got the following email:

"Dear Winfrey - I received your message today and am glad to hear you're getting better and going home. Now how do we get your owner to go see a (head) doctor?"

HA HA!

It was looking soooo rough last week. She was miserable after her surgery. As she hacked and panted while I took her to the emergency clinic, I saw the same look in her eyes that I have seen in very sick friends. Think that is what hit me the hardest, almost a universal look of pain and resignation.

A "Winfrey Marionette"

All of the Vets and staff who saw Winfrey noted how very very good and cooperative she was. She took it all in stride. That has always been her nature. She states her case if she does not want to do something, but knows if she has to and when it is good for her. Over the weekend, she had two IV's, one for fluids, one for food. The Vet said, "Pardon the time it is taking to get her ready for you to see her, we have to deal with the tubes." I pictured a "Winfrey Marionette" in my head and said so, which made the Vet laugh.

Thank you AGAIN profusely everyone for your phone calls and emails of support!!!

Holy Cow (again Winfrey wants to chase them... well she ain't chasin "holy cows" for another several years I pray! :-) I had just finally cleaned out my In box of a few hundred messages, and I am back up to 125. Y'all rock! Y'all bark! WOOF WOOF ARF WOOF!  It is amazing the stories and reinforcement you have sent.

I told a friend on recently that I don't think us humans share enough of our heart felt moments, pain and pleasure, so that we many times feel isolated. Does not matter who you are, it still happens. Complacency on the modern day habitual tread mill effectively isolates us when we should realize there are less than 150 full moons to bark at in a typical doggie life, and less than 933 in the average human life in the US. There is no time for complacency.

Winfrey's rules for life Number 1:

Never waste a full moon.

It is wonderful when we open the door to communication... especially in these moments... all of a sudden we start hearing that there are others with the same problems, we are not alone, we understand each other, and we can help each other out, even if just wishing each other well.  There is NO REASON for heartbreak! And we can go on appreciating what we have and meeting the next challenge whatever it may be. That rocks! That barks!

Again leave it up to our fury little friends to remind us of these lessons to take care of each other. It is not just about the furry friends, is it?

The squirrels are still on vacation.

No we cannot go to doggie park right away. The squirrels will get a little longer vacation. (I can hear them now saying "yippie!") Believe it or not this weekend after visiting Winfrey in San Mateo, I went to a park to chill out, and actually chased a squirrel for her. I know most of you reading this KNOW I would do that. The little squirrel kept rounding the tree, stopping on branches, looking at me, and saying, "What wild hair got up your butt!??! You don't have a tail. Why are you chasing me?" Well, Winfrey does not have a tail either.

The Queen's Taste Tester

We have some time to get back up to snuff. Speaking of snuffing, we still DO NOT know what caused this. So, as I wrote in a letter to a friend, just like ten years ago when Winfrey got "bounced" by a truck and survived, my "mega maternal instinct" again is on high alert and I am going to hawk over every little thing she even thinks about sticking her nose in. Heck, I'll stick my nose in it first! Yes that is right, I am going to be the "Queensland Heeler's Taste Tester!" Long live the Queen! HA! HA!

Cat's, Sheep, Cell Phones, and Baby Elephants

So this afternoon we took a cat nap. Ironic huh? To get to sleep we counted, I mean herded sheep. Winfrey cannot jump on anything so stayed in her little doggie bed on the floor. I hung my arm over my bed to scratch her on the head and fell asleep. Well what happens when you hang your arm over the bed and fall asleep? YOUR ARM FALLS ASLEEP. The phone rang and I went to pick it up. Nice way to drop a phone.

Tonight we are chillin out listening to Mancini music. OK I am listening to Mancini, Winfrey is sleeping. There is something soothing about the "Baby Elephant Walk" after going through a traumatic week.

A sneak preview of Winfrey's future

SOOOO Winfrey and I promise that we are going to share our creativity with y'all for being so supportive. We think you already know that there are a few shedded Winfrey hairs worth as of the last 12 years. Time to get the archives ONLINE!

Today I went out and bought a tablet mouse so that Winfrey and I can draw better on the PC. Yes the Winfrey cartoon has begun!

Winfrey's Famous Friends

There are EVEN Movies! As you know, this is not just about Winfrey. IT is about all of her pals, human and furry. Here is a movie of her buddy Gumbo dancing to Mambo #5. No joke!

Final thoughts until her next update:

We ain't out of the woods yet.  Winfrey needs a lot of TLC to fully recover.

Moments like this definitely turn on a different energy... a thousand thoughts, some good, some not so good. Focus is intense. Priorities immediately change. Things that where worried about before are now specs of dust blowing by. It is such an obvious statement to say that life is short. We've heard it, we forget it, we hear it again, we forget it again. Then life smacks us upside the head. Yeah a fuzzy little doggie named Winfrey was my reminder, a catalyst. My mom said it when she said, "That's the best friend you'll ever have!" We both know this is not just about Winfrey. Anyone reading this knows there is a much bigger picture. Many of you have had your own reminders in the last year. Haven't we all with some of the large events going on right now. We are lucky to have each other for the blink on Earth we got. Make the best of it!

A phrase has been echoing in my head for days now, "Complacency be damned!" Ain't sitting on our butts for long once she gets better. We got some life to live, squirrels to chase, car window dog nose art to create, doggie percussion music to play, etc. etc. etc.

Yep a fuzzy little doggie causes all that seriousness to pour out of the mind of a guy who totes rubber chickens around with him. :-) We love you little buddy!

Love,

Hans
